A dedicated team of Portsmouth teens and millennials have been getting the word out in the community about the upcoming Shaping the Future Summit, to be held at Tidewater Community College on September 30th from 8:30am to 12pm. The outreach team is working to ensure that all of Portsmouth’s residents have an opportunity to come out and be heard.
A group of teens has attended five local events to distribute information about the Summit, including Sunset Thursdays, the Seawall Art Festival, and the Portsmouth Public Schools celebration. They have also been out in their own neighborhoods distributing information and inviting their neighbors to attend.
Young professionals Max Greenhood, Toi Wilson, and Joel Perkins are also encouraging Portsmouth Millennials to attend the Shaping the Future Summit in a new video. As Joel states, “we are the ones who are going to feel the impact of the decisions that are made through this campaign and through this comprehensive plan, and I think it’s important that we take time out f our lives to come out to voice our concerns, our hopes, out dreams and our vision of what we want to see Portsmouth to be”.
Toi shares, “One of the things that’s important to me is being part of something that’s bigger than myself, and that’s why I want to encourage other people to be a part of the planning for the City of Portsmouth”.
Participation by the young people of Portsmouth, as well as residents of all ages, will be crucial to shaping a plan that works for everyone in the community. Max, a fourth generation Portsmouth native and business owner, emphasizes that “it’s important for everybody – residents, business owners, parents, grandparents – to get involved”. The Shaping the Future Summit will be focused on identifying concrete actions that can help us to achieve our goals as a community. As Joel says, “Now is the time, so come out and share”. We hope to see you there!
